Ladder Safety

Ladders can provide an effective means of height access for jobs of short duration.  However, there are many types and sizes of ladders which provide different types of access, so selecting the most suitable ladder for the job is a key consideration in ensuring the job can be carried out safely.

Before you use a ladder, take the time to carry out an inspection to ensure it is in good working order.  Using a damaged or otherwise compromised ladder can have serious consequences – it’s not worth the risk.

Next, assess the location where the task is being undertaken.  Ensure the ground surface is firm, level, and free of debris and contaminants.  Consider any other obstacles that are relevant to the location – overhead structures (including power lines), electrical hazards, openable doors and windows, and the chance of access by other personnel whilst undertaking the task.  Take necessary precautions to eliminate any potential risks before you begin work.

Make sure you are familiar with, and understand, all safety information relating to the ladder you are using.  Observe and obey all safety precautions supplied with and attached to the ladder.
